Recently people of Aamjiwnaang added to some of the photos Iâve been taking of their community by drawing and writing on them.
Before Demetrio, Santana and Mitchal (age 8 to 11) let their imagination run wild, Marina drew an Aamjiwnaang flag and a tree, which she wishes were added to the shoreline of the St.Clair River. The three boys then imagined what would happen if the moon struck the earth. They said most of the current species would die, but new ones would be created. The smiling face in the water, is the spirit of the water, which can never die. Superman would try to save everyone, but since "he's really only human, he can't do much..."

In Aamjiwnaang First Nation, nearly 850 Anishinabek people live in the shadow of Canadaâs densest concentration of petrochemical manufacturing. The project âOur Grandfathers Were Chiefsâ explores the youthâs relationships with their heritage and land.
